Rachel Jacobsohn

The Reading Group Handbook

I included an essay, “Empowerment”, before the APPENDIXES of TRGH’s first edition. This essay was replaced with “Past Fear” in the second edition. A paragraph in this first essay is often quoted. “The art of reading demands courage. In reading we challenge our belief system and activate a vulnerability to personal change---physical, moral, psychological, and social. If you do not want to change, don’t read—or read only the same old stuff that has you stagnating in a puddle of your own beliefs. Those with the courage to encounter the truths of history and the forces of change, read on: Stretch your limits of creativity.” P. 135-6
